Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place primarily in the year 1986, during the time frame of October 4 and October 5 on a small, secluded island named Rokkenjima (六軒島) owned and lived on by [url=/c200]Kinzo[/url], the head of the wealthy Ushiromiya family. Kinzo is expected to pass soon due to his age, and so his 4 children and their families arrive on the island to discuss how Kinzo's assets will be divided after his death for the annual family conference. But when a typhoon hits the island, a ghastly game begins, starting with the murder of six people and the discovery of a letter signed by Beatrice, the island's golden witch of legend, beckoning the family to solve her epitaph and find the island's hidden gold before it is too late. 『うみねこのなく頃に散』（うみねこのなくころにちる）とは同人サークルである07th Expansion（セブンスエキスパション）が製作している同人ゲーム。略称は「うみねこ散」。 連作シリーズである『うみねこのなく頃に』の第五部作以降を『うみねこのなく頃に散』と呼ぶ。また、竜騎士07の前作『ひぐらしのなく頃に』の第五部作からは「解答編」であったが、今シリーズの第五部作からは「展開編」とされている（ただし、漫画版は「解答編」と銘打たれていることが多い）。 2009年夏のコミックマーケット76にて『うみねこのなく頃に』シリーズ第五部作、『うみねこのなく頃に散 episode5 - End of the golden witch』が発表され、2010年冬のコミックマーケット79にて第八部作（最終話）、『うみねこのなく頃に散 episode8 - Twilight of the golden witch』が発表され、完結した。
